Sonic Gear Ego 7 (RM 149)

Filed under:

The Sonic Gear Ego7 is a decent set of speakers for the casual desktop computer. They're compact and won't take up a lot of space on your desk which is good thing considering you're going to have top pop these babies on your table to get access to the volumn control. It has a hypnotic glowing blue screen that doesn't change nor tell you anything other than this is a "Sonic Gear Ego 7 Multimeida Speaker System". Gee, thanks. We would've never worked that out outselves. You'd have thought that they'd at least include a volume indicator onscreen, but alas no -it remains a glorified label. For all these faults though, we have to concede that the Ego7 delivers quality sound. Mid-range performance is decent and bass is pretty flawless. The Ego7 looks great. Its slick, black gloss exrerior and glowing blue lights, though nothing new, are easy on the eye and are sure to add a little sex appeal to even the most modest rig.

Sony Ericsson's Walkman mobile range gets a new 8GB model - the W980i - a 3G HSDPA phone with an FM transmitter inside for sending tunes to radios

Sony Ericsson has pumped up its music mobile lineup with the release of the W980i Walkman music mobile, a smart clamshell device with 8GB of internal storage, and an FM radio transmitter built in. The W980i Walkman is also the first of the music-centric range to use Walkman on Top external music player controls on the front of the phone's flip.
Sony Ericsson promises an enhanced clear audio performance from its new W980i Walkman, and room for up to 8,000 tracks inside. The W980i doesn't offer Memory Stick Micro (M2) card expansion, however, just the onboard 8GB of storage.

The 3G HSDPA, quad-band GSM/GPRS phone supports downloading of tracks over the air, with links to Sony Ericsson's PlayNow service embedded in the phone. It includes the Shake control and SensMe functions included on recent Walkman mobiles, but introduces an FM transmitter for the first time - enabling W980i users to transmit their tunes to other nearby FM radio devices, including hi-fis and car stereos.

It comes equipped with Sony Ericsson's usual array of Walkman phone standard gadgetry, including TrackID, stereo Bluetooth and an FM radio with RDS. A 3.2-megapixel camera is in the spec too, with picture and video blogging options for captured images. Video calling, downloading and streaming are all part of the feature rundown too, and a full web browser is onboard, with RSS feed support.
The W980i has a 2.2-inch, 262,144-colour QVGA (240x320 pixels) internal display and a smaller 176x176 pixels 262,144-colour external screen, and music player battery life of up to 16 hours.

Available in Piano Black, the Sony Ericsson W980i is due to hit the shelves in the third quarter of 2008.

HP Touchsmart IQ508d (RM 5688)

As hot as...a really big iphone

We were charmed by the sheer audacity of the original Touchsmart. A desktop computer that thinks it's an iPhone? Barmy. Unfortunately it was big, not especially pretty and underpowered for the cash. The second coming addresses all of these issues- now it's just 2.6in thick but with a vast 22in hi-def screen and a much-improved fingertip-controlled interface. There's a 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM and a 256MB nVidia GeForece 9300 M graphic card under the hood, while a 500GB hard disk provides ample strogare music, movies and photos. We still question just now useful a touchscreen PC is when you have a perfectly good mouse in your handm but hey, the iMac doesn;t have one...yet

Nikon D700

Filed under:

On the 1st July 2008, Nikon announced something of a surprise - their second “FX” full-frame 35mm DSLR, the D700. Although there were many leaks leading up to the launch (some just rumours, some real) it was still somewhat interesting that such a well-specified camera would appear only 6 months after the introduction of the flagship D3 model.

The D700 is, to most intents and purposes, a D3 shrunk down to fit inside the body of a D300 - although with some omissions, and also some additions. This means it’s possible it’s going to take some of the D3’s market share, but it most likely is designed to go up against whatever Canon are preparing to replace their excellent but aging 5D.

The new D700 therefore sits squarely in Nikon’s professional lineup in between the D3 and the D300, with the same incredible build quality and reliability. In this review we’ll fully describe the camera, and highlight where exactly these models differ.

GPS comes to Walkman phones with Sony Ericsson's W760i

With built in GPS satellite navigation capability, 3G HSDPA and a 3.2-megapixel camera, the W760i Walkman sliderphone is far more than just a music mobile

Sony Ericsson has added built in GPS to its Walkman phone lineup for the first time with the unveiling of its W760i sliderphone.
Announced at the CES event in Las Vegas, the W760i comes with an integrated GPS receiver for onboard satellite navigation, 3G HSDPA high-speed download technology and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

The W760i arrives with the latest version of Sony Ericsson's Walkman Player that supports Shake control for skipping forward and back tracks, plus SensMe mood-matching playlist technology, and TrackID. A pair of front facing stereo speakers are designed to enhance the loudspeaker playback experience, although Sony Ericsson also announced an optional speaker case accessory, the Active Speaker MAS-100, that can be attached to the phone to crank up sound further.

A 1GB Memory Stick Micro card is supplied in-box to go with 40MB of internal storage, as well as quality stereo headphones with a standard headphone jack - although there's still no 3.5mm jack socket on the phone itself.

The W760i's GPS receiver can be used with the Wayfinder Navigator subscription service app, supplied on the phone. This can provide over the air updates and turn by turn directions for countries all over the world. Other apps, such as Google Maps Mobile - preloaded on the W760i - can also be used with the GPS receiver, and Sony Ericsson has included a fitness application, Tracker, that uses GPS to keep a log of your performances when running or walking.

Sony Ericsson has brought the motion sensor technology into play for other features, including automatic screen rotation for viewing content, depending on how you're holding the phone, and motion sensor gadgetry is also incorporated into its 3D games capability. The display is a 2.2inch, QVGA (240x320 pixels) 262K-colour TFT screen
Standard 3G functionality - video calling via a secondary camera, high-speed video and audio downloads and streaming - are present, and the W760i has a full web browser inside, plus support for RSS feeds. Email and instant messaging are offered, plus there's a picture blogging option when using the camera or video. Stereo Bluetooth and USB connecttivity are featured too, as you'd expect.

The W760i, which will be available in Rocky Silver, Fancy Red or Intense Black, weighs 103g and measures 103(h) x 48(w) x 15(d) mm. Sony Ericsson quotes battery life of up to 400 hours standby or 9 hours talktime (4 hours on 3G networks). The Walkman player can go up 20 hours between charges.

The W760i is being lined up for release in the second quarter of 2008, with expected price still to be confirmed.
